✦ Synopsis
The reduction of iodine by hydroxylamine within the range ϩ Ϫ 1 [H ] 3 ϫ 10 -3 ϫ was first studied until completion of the reaction. In most cases, the concentra-Ϫ4 Ϫ1
10 mol.L tion of iodine decreased monotonically. However, within a narrow range of reagent concentrations ratio below 15, around and ionic strength around
), the [I 2 ] and vs. time curves showed 2 and 3 extrema, respectively. This Ϫ1 Ϫ 0.1 mol.L [I ] 3 peculiar phenomenon is discussed using a 4 reaction scheme Ϫ Ϫ (I ϩ I ⇔ I , 2 I ϩ 2 3 2 and ϩ Ϫ ϩ ϩ ϩ NH OH ϩ H O : HNO ϩ 4 I ϩ 5 H , NH OH ϩ HNO : N O ϩ 2 H O ϩ H , 3 2 2 3 2 2 2
In a flow reactor, sustained oscillations in re-
dox potential were recorded with an extremely long period (around 24 h). The kinetics of the reaction was then investigated in the starting conditions. The proposed rate equation points out a reinforcement of the inhibition by hydrogen ions when is ϩ [H ] above at 25ЊC. A mechanism based on ion-transfer reactions is postulated.
