โฆ Synopsis
The polymerization of acrylic acid in the absence and in presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was carried out using a redox initiation system (Fenton's reagent). It was found that at 26 ยฐ and 74 ยฐ the rate of polymerization in the absence of template was very high, up to 80% conversion being achieved within 4 min. In the presence of the template, however, there was a pronounced decrease in rate which is directly related to the molar mass of the template--a "negative" chain effect. Rate measurements in the presence of N-methyl pyrrolidone showed that the overall fall in rate could be attributed to complexion of initiator and the pyrrolidone group. This was confirmed by spectroscopic data.
