A rovarlámpa égője biztosan kiégett, mert csak a keresztutca másik oldalán lévő lakóházat látta, amely karácsonyi lámpákkal volt díszítve, és az apró fényszórókat a parti úton, a bepárásodott lencsében miniatürizálva. Már hónapok óta nem cserélte ki azt az égőt. Mosolyogva nyitott ajtót, hiszen félig számított is rá, hogy vissza fog jönni, és tudta jól, hogy hatalma van fölötte. És mert boldog volt. Aztán az arcára fagyott a mosoly, miközben utoljára még átvillant az agyán: Ne!"
