Neither the removal of the stele, which contains over 90% of the auxin found in the primary roots of Zea mays L., nor its replacement by auxin (indole-3-acetic acid, IAA) solutions had any demonstrable effect on the elongation of root tips or subapical cortical cylinders (except inhibition at higher

On solving the non-linear diffusion equa
โœ J.B. Passioura; I.R. Cowan ๐Ÿ“‚ Article ๐Ÿ“… 1968 ๐Ÿ› Elsevier Science โš– 230 KB

The non-linear diffusion equation for the radial flow of water to a root can be solved approximately by assuming that iSO/~t is either zero (steady state) or constant (steady rate). The accuracy of such solutions has been in doubt, so they are here compared with exact solutions obtained numerically.

Location of the major barriers to water

The main barriers to the movement of water and ions in young roots of Zea mays were located by observing the effects of wounding various cell layers of the cortex on the roots' hydraulic conductivities and root pressures. These parameters were measured with a root pressure probe. Injury to the epide
