The authors discuss the process and problems of recruiting subjects for a study of violent behavior experienced by otherwise normal adults. In a recent study, intensive recruitment efforts generated 443 self-referrals that resulted in the entry of ten percent of the inquirers. Descriptive clinical and demographic profiles of applicants are presented with emphasis on factors associated with noninclusion.
