A NUMBER OF PAPERS, both in this journal and elsewhere, have suggested or reported difficulty in recording Powell & Stetson vibration fringes of high fringe order l, 2,3,4. Reported photographically or visually recorded fringe orders have ranged from 10 typically1, 2 to, exceptionally, 26. Some authors have commented that the theoretical intensity distribution of the fringes is not reproduced.
