Book Reviews 1277 consider peculiarities such as blocked weirs for low liquid rates or foaming systems. That which is described is conventional text book (Perry), and offers little guidance on the choice of equipment for various purposes or on solving practical problems. Nowhere in the book is the important effect on design of operating pressure mentioned, although this determines not only flow rates but physical properties. Similar detailed criticisms might be made of most of the other chapters.
The software to be used in the exercises is that of EURECHA (European Committee for Computers in Chemical Engineering Education), so that those wishing to use this text for teaching will need to obtain these or similar programs.
Those intending to solve practical distillation problems may be well advised to use guaranteed commercial computer design packages.
To sum-rise the above, the book provides a useful overview of distillation and of the many ways in which design problems may be-solved with a computer. It will only have some limited value in solving real practical problems, but it does provide a useful basis for university teaching.
