✦ Synopsis

Since the proposal of Bandyopadhyay and co-workers in 1967 on dynamic method to determine kLa values in aerobic fermentation with the membrane-covered oxygen electrode,' quite a few articles have been presented from various circles to improve the reliability of kLa determination by the dynamic m e t h ~d . ~-~ Briefly, these publications, which followed the first proposal, have taken into account not only the electrode response but also dynamics of gassing either nitrogen or air to minimize the error of kLa values.

However, it might be said that this sequel of publications tends to become more sophisticated these days, from one to three-layer models, for instance,6 to an extent that one may feel some embarrassment when the most adequate model must be selected before practice of the kLa determination in a particular environment.

The purpose of this communication is to present a quick and reliable measurement of kLa in aerobic fermentation via reassessment of the original method. In view of the recent publications referred to above, the reassessment here is deemed to be still rewarding.

## Abstract This reports on the determination of the overall oxygen transfer coefficient in a mechanically agitated vessel using a randomly pulsed dynamic method. This method consists in exciting the system by randomly switching the inlet gas stream with air or nitrogen with an identical volumetric
