Historical World War II Fiction, Jewish Literature,
If you are able to write 180 pages of your memoir without putting the pen down, I might let you liveβ¦
Klaus Holland loves no one other than himself. He victimizes people for being Jews or for just being alive.
He is an old Nazi criminal who escaped to Brazil and was caught and prosecuted. He is now forced to write his memoirs as part of his punishment β the same punishment he used to give Jews at the concentration camp. This punishment makes him remember and re-live his cruelty as the concentration camp commander and as a man.
Deus Esperanca learns from his mother that what he believed to be his familyβs history, was just a bunch of lies. He discovers that his real father is Klaus Holland β the sadistic Nazi fugitive.
Having this information and his father being aware of what he knows, their lives intertwine and create chaos.
"Ye Jewish whore's daughter,β I used to mock her, jokingly, when sleeping with her on the shabby wooden floor of the cellar father left me upon leaving this world. At first, she used to respond by twisting her face with indignation, yet right afterwards she would smile with her ivory-white teeth, displaying her tiny dimples I used to kiss so passionately. Matilda never figured out why, of all places, I chose to make love to her with such a passion on that faded bloodstain, yet she never bothered to pry. She just gave me her endless and boundless love, anywhere and anytime. It seemed that our love grew so unnaturally strong exactly because of that placeβ¦.β
This is how Klaus Holland, a man who loved nobody but himself most of his life, describes his relationship with one of the women he had victimized in return for their love.
One day, shortly before his mother's death, Deus Esperanca learns from her that what he believed to be his family history was just a bunch of lies. Upon learning that, he leaves his parents' home for good, with two enigmatic photos his mother had left him, embarking on a fascinating and dangerous quest for the truth, that his father was actually Klaus Holland, a sadistic Nazi fugitive. On this quest, he would encounter many characters whom his father had victimized in many ways, including Deus' own sister.
This, just as Olokita's last book, Ten Simple Rules, is a fascinating adventure novel, spanning over 3 continents and two decades, throwing the reader back and forth in time, through numerous twists, scenic landscapes, violent clashes and tragic love affairs, all building up towards a surprising climax when all the terrible truths are revealed.
Reasons to Kill God has made a best seller in Israel. It is I.V. Olokita's second book. His first book, Ten Simple Rules, published in 2015, had won the first prize in an Israeli new authors' competition.
