✦ Synopsis

The positive and negative ion mass spectra of clausmarin A, a naturally occurring tetracyclic conmarin, have been studied. The base peaks in the positive and negative ion spectra correspond to the complementary ions at mlz 143 and mlz 255, respectively, formed by a rearrangement reaction. The fragmentation pathways have been elucidated with the help of exact mass measurements and in situ deuterium labelling.

## Abstract The 70 eV negative ion mass spectra of some simple aromatic and aliphatic thio and dithio esters are discussed. A characteristic fragmentation process, a rearrangement analogous to the nitro‐nitrite conversion of aromatic nitro compounds, is observed for aromatic thio esters.
