Abstract
Filter constraints are given which enable filters to be designed which give zero intersymbol interference at the output of the frequency discriminator in an FM system; these constraints are developed in the frequency domain which enables satisfactory noise bandwidths to be obtained. The results are not limited to a particular deviation ratio and are applicable to both continuous and discontinuous phase systems. Some examples are given including a practical IF filter design for a 4.8 K bit/sec, 250 kHz centre frequency, 0.8 deviation ratio system. The noise bandwidth of this filter is 5.72 kHz and it is shown that the minimum possible obtainable noise bandwidth is 4.63 kHz.
