Abstract
The oxidation of 1‐hydrazinophthalazine (AH) by Fe^3+^ has been studied. In the primary electron exchange reaction a free radical A is formed which, in the presence of a large excess of Fe^2+^, forms a deep blue complex FeA^2+^. At high [Fe^3+^] A is rapidly oxidized to phthalazine and N~2~. In acid solution at pH < 2 the radical ion AH^+^ is stable for a longer period of time.
