✦ Synopsis

Washington, D.C.: 1991. 489 p.
This book of instructional materials for reading in Czech are intended for college-level students, and are designed to bring native English-speakers from an 0+ (Novice High) to a 1+ (Intermediate High) language proficiency level on the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages/Interagency Language Roundtable proficiency scale. The workbook consists of 30 units on 10 topics: transportation; food; housing; health; commerce; communications; entertainment; education; politics; and environment. One unit is presented for each level on each topic. Instruction focuses exclusively on reading skills and development of reading strategies for authentic materials. An introductory section discusses the role of reading in daily life and describes briefly a variety of reading strategies to be used, including recognizing cognates, grouping, using background knowledge, skimming, scanning, inferring meaning, and summarizing. Each unit consists of reproductions of authentic materials called "texts" and exercises for language practice and cultural awareness. An answer key is included for each unit.
