โฆ Synopsis
The facts and theories which are generally accepted are first reviewed, particular attention being paid both to the phenomenological aspects of surface oxide formation and decomposition, and to the occurrence of maxima in Arrhenius plots at elevated temperatures. There is an obvious need to extend present theories, which are capable of offering a unified interpretation of the C + CO, and C + Hz0 reactions, to encompass the C+O, system. The second part of the paper summarizes the problems, relating to reactivity, which have been solved by, and the fresh challenges that have emerged from, the techniques of optical and electron microscopy. Finally, several unsolved problems are brought into focus, and ways of tackling future studies are discussed by reference to a variety of new techniques.
