✦ Synopsis

Al~tract--The behaviour of 9-methylfluorenyl alkali salts is nearly the same as that of the corresponding fluorenyl salts, as shown by studies of the effects of temperature, counterion and solvent on the ultraviolet and visible spectra. A marked shift in ). max on substituting a methyl group on the 9-hydrogen atom in alkali fluorenyl salts is related to the anomalous increase of the acidity of the 9-hydrogen in 9-methylfluorene. This might be explained b.v a predominant effect of charge delocalization leading to the higher ease of formation of solvent separated ion pairs with respect to fluoren31 salts.

It has been shown that initiation of the anionic polymerization of ethylene oxide by 9-methylfluorenyl alkali salts is a simple process of addition whereas side reactions occur for fluorenyl salts. Reactivities of different kinds of ionic species were determined by spectropbotometry in the case of 9
