✦ Synopsis
Reactivities of the growing species in the polymerization of cyclic ethers (tetrahydrofuran and oxepane) were measured for model compounds and compared with those found for polymerization. The endocyclic ~-C atoms, in comparison with the exocyclic atoms, are approximately 102 times more reactive for tetrahydrofuranium cation and only a few times for oxepanium cation. The possible reasons for this phenomenon are discussed. The exo/endo reactivities of oxonium ions are compared with the sulphonium and ammonium ions which are the active species in the cationic polymerizations of other heterocyclics.
