✦ Synopsis
Radical copolymerizations of citraconic acid (CA) derivatives including citraconic anhydride (CAn), N-alkylcitraconimides (RCIs), dialkylcitraconates (DRCs) and dialkyl mesaconates (DRMs) with vinyl acetate (VAc) were performed in bulk at 60 ° with 0.02 mol.dm 3 of 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile. Alternating copolymers having molecular weights > 10,000 were obtained from the systems of CAn and DRMs with VAc. On the other hand, no alternating tendency was observed in the copolymerizations of RCIs and DRCs with VAc. The relative reactivities of these CA derivatives towards a polyvinyl acetate radical were found to decrease in the order; CAn > RCIs -~ DRMs > DRCs. The relative reactivities of DRCs were little influenced by their ester alkyl substituents. Thermogravimetric analyses of the resulting copolymers were also carried out.
