✦ Synopsis

The reactions of C,Sc+ (n = 2-6) with O2 have been studied by using an rf ion trap. C&c+ was produced by the laser ablation of a mixed sample of graphite and scandium. Observed reaction product ions were ScO+ for all C,Sc.+, and BcD: only for C.Sc+ with odd n. In the case of C&c+, the loss of 2C neutrals, leading to C&+ production, was alsO observed. The estimated rate constants of C,,Sc+ +Oz reactions were found to alternate in magnitude with the cluster size; C,Sc+ clusters with even n have rate constants much lower than those with odd n.

Ions in an externally generated laser plasma of heavy metals have been directly confined in an RF ion trap and subjected to ion-molecule reactions. Trapped metal ions as well as their chemical reaction products have been detected with a quadrupole mass spectrometer. The first four ions of Sd transit
