✦ Synopsis
Work dealing with the reaction between Cu(II) and ethylenedithioldiacetic acid 1'2 has provided some information about the compound which exists in the reactant solution. Chelates CuHZ and CuZ (HZ-and Z 2-representing the anions of the acid) were found to be formed at a Cu(II):acid molar ratio of n= 1 and their stability constants were determined.
In our previous work 3, CuZ, the chelate formed at a molar ratio of n= 1, was isolated and examined and found to be a slightly soluble compound. Also the polarographic reduction waves of a soluble chelate of Cu(II) at a metal :ligand molar ratio of n = ½ were observed 4.
In the present work we have attempted to calculate the stability constants of the two chelates formed on the basis of the data obtained from the polarographic behaviour of Cu(II) upon reduction from H2Z at the DME in aqueous solution.
