The interaction between vanilmandelic and L-ascorbic acids led to a cyclopenb2-en-one deriwttive, whereas the reaction of methyl vanilmandelate with L-ascorbic acid yielded 2-furancarboxTlic acid as the major product. The model 3-substituted 4-hydruxyben~l alcohols and Lascorbic acid produced ascorbigen-Lype structures, which easily decarboxylated to givc mixtures of the corresponding l-aryl-l-deoxyketoses.
