โœฆ Synopsis

Abstract

The reaction between NO(g) at concentrations between 0.1 and 1.0 Torr in 1โ€atm N~2~ and aqueous solutions of NaClO has been studied over the pH range of 6โ€“12 and hypochlorite concentrations between 0.01 and 1.0__M__. A very rapid and efficient reaction occurs leading to the production of about 30%โ€“40% of the NO as NO~2~ and with conversions of NO up to 98% at about 1โ€sec contact time. It is shown that a fast chain reaction initiated by the endothermic step

can account for the data. The very exothermic reaction NO + ClO^โˆ’^ โ†’ NO~2~ + Cl^โˆ’^ is shown to be at least 30โ€fold slower than i. The overall reaction seems very promising as a method of reducing NO and NO~2~ emissions from the exhausts of industrial plants.

The reaction of HOC1 with more highly substituted olefins in methylene chloride affords allylic chlorides in 60-80% isolated yields. The utility of the reaction is illustrated with the synthesis of Rose oxide and a-monoterpenes. We wish to report a synthetically important reaction of hypochlorous

The reaction has been studied spectrophotometrically monitoring the absorbance in the wavelength range. The spectra of the reactants, intermediates, and prod-240-400 nm ucts in this system are overlapping; thus special programs [1,2] have been used (and tested) to unravel the kinetics and mechanism
