✦ Synopsis

Communications system with DIC catalyst (Table 1, PG25) required a UV radiation time of 130 min for the phase separation to disappear while the radiation time for the same system with TSHF was 25 min. We have also prepared TiO, and AI,O, glasses and their binary and/or ternary hybrids with PM--MSMA and/ or SiO, by the photoacid-catalyzed sol-gel reactions of titanium(1v) isopropoxide, aluminum(nr) sec-butoxide, TEOS, and/or PM-MSMA precursors.1121

In summary, we have demonstrated that polyacrylate-silica hybrid materials can be prepared photochemically by using photoacids as catalysts in sol-gel reactions. The reaction rates, as represented by the UV radiation time and the gelation time, were found to inrease with the amount of the photoacids and the polymer precursors and with the intensity of the radiation. Detailed kinetic studies on this interesting system are in progress. Furthermore, we are also exploring the potential dental and laser-aided stereolithography applications of this photochemical process for the fabrication of coatings and devices with inorganic/ceramic and/or hybrid materials.
