Abstract
Reaction calorimetry has found widespread acceptance as a valuable tool that provides a combination of thermal hazard and process data for batchβtype reactors. There have been many significant advances in this type of instrument over the last few years, which include both improvements in methodology and the addition of new experimental features. This article describes, with examples, the basic elements of a reaction calorimeter, comparison of commercial devices, and a number of new development, including the use of power compensation in place of the more familiar heat flow calorimetry.
Applications to process safety and reaction optimization are presented with data from the SIMULAR reaction calorimeter.
