A Kenyan NGO's perspective In Kenya, only about 2% of the rural population has gained access to grid electricity, leaving more than 20 million people literally in the dark. It is estimated that solar home systems (SHSs) can fill the lighting and low power (TV, radio, etc) requirements grid-based electricity gap for approximately 55% of this rural population. There is still a large shortfall. David Otieno from Solarnet -a Kenyan NGO -provides his perspective of RE in Africa and how education and awareness in schools and rural communities is a key factor to building RE capacity in Africa.
