✦ Synopsis

Expressions for the rate of charging of thermionically emitting particles in regions of space charge arc presented. The analysis is valid for the case in which the mean freΒ’ path is greater than the particle radius and the energy gained by ions or electrons from the field in a mean freΒ’ path is small compared to their thermal energy. The motion of partic!es which are simultaneously growing and acquiring a charge in a constant electric fiekl/s considered, and a crilerion for the applicabihty of the steady state mobility Β’qualion is deduced.
