✦ Synopsis
The derivation of a method for estimating the washout rate in an uptake-washout process from tracer-kinetic data is described. The uptake-washout process has a biexponential model, and the data collected is assumed to be Poisson. The bias and relative standard deviation of the estimator are compared to those of the maximum likelihood estimator for selected test cases. The washout-rate estimator has the characteristics that it is computationally efficient and that it performs well for small data values, which necessarily contain large amounts of error. Estimators for the remaining three parameters of the model are derived although no tests were made of their performance.

We propose a Bayesian approach using nonhomogeneous Poisson process to estimate the number of species of a population. The proposed methodology uses a -mixture to eliminate the unknown total mean of each species. One contribution of the article is to apply the Metropolis-within-Gibbs algorithm to ob
