✦ Synopsis
Quenching rate constants for removal by nobel gases have been measured for O,, &, 4W and 606 rotational levels in the 'B,(O, 14,O) state of methylene. For the higher rotational levels the quenching is approximately twice as fast as for the lower levels, except for the heavy gas xenon, where no significant variation is observed. Application of Parmenter's and multipole force. models groups the data around two lines corresponding to lower and higher rotational stntes. The mechanism of quenching is discussed in terms oftbe internal perturbations atkting the selected rotational states and the perturbations induced by the atomic collider.
