โฆ Synopsis
A group of new &k-graphite compounds, where Me represents the elements Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm and Yb was prepared. The compounds were formed by reacting graphite with a metallic solution of rare earth elements in liquid ammonia. Except for ytterbium which dissolves directly in liquid ammonia, all other rare earths had to be dissolved by electrolytic techniques using a Pt-cathode, a rare earth anode and NH41 as an electrolyte. The intercalation compounds were analyzed for Me, C, N, H and I. Magnetic susceptibility measurements were carried out at several temperatures between 80ยฐK and 290ยฐK. The measurements indicate that in Gd-, Tb-, Dy-, Ho-, Er-and Tm-graphite the rare earths are present in the trivalent state. In ytterbium graphite, ytterbium has an effective valency betvveen two and three. X-ray data will be discussed.
