Recommendations
Recognizing that environmental quality considerations generally lie outside of the design criteria of historical soil classification surveys, a reallocation of spending on these surveys is required to identify soil quality differences. Initially, new monitoring of agriculture land should include: (1) A national survey on a county basis of trends in the levels of soil organic matter; measures of nutrient content; measures of erosion; and (2) a national survey using remote sensing technology and statistical information from the Canadian Census of Agriculture to locate and monitor cropping practises. It is believed that these recommendations would be supported by soil scientists and farmers.
The agriculture Work Group was asked to consider two questions: (1) Identify the most important variables which should be measures to ensure sustainable agriculture ecology and (2) Identify indicators of the resilience of soil ecosystems.

We identified the most important variables, which should be examined, and the thresholds which could be used to alert managers in order to achieve sustainable management of the fisheries resource.
We attempted to make some clarification of how indicators fit into monitoring programs. Monitoring can be for (a) prediction, and (b)'unnatural' changes in ecosystems. Monitoring includes: field sampling, data analysis, interpretation (i.e. we must select indicators that are interpretable) and actio
