β¦ Synopsis
This article looks first at the membership trends of Korean Christianity during the period of rapid modernisation, that is, from the early 1960s. While membership of Korean Christianity has grown explosively since this time, the growth rate began to decline from the mid 1980s onwards. It will be shown that the decline in the growth rate has, however, been different in Protestantism and Catholicism over the same period. The article looks at the different responses of both Protestantism and Catholicism to the process of rapid social and cultural change, and how these responses have influenced both membership growth and decline. In particular, it is argued that globalised postmodern culture has deeply influenced the recent membership crisis in Korean Christianity. The paper will close by summarising the contrasting Christian responses and predicting the future of Korean Christianity.
