โœฆ Synopsis

Abstract

The current role of rapeseed meal (RSM) as a source of protein for laying hens is discussed. The advantages of the use of meal from low glucosinolate rapeseed cultivars are emphasised. The effect of the inclusion of RSM in layer rations on egg quality is discussed with special reference to the problem of the fishy egg taint which occurs in the eggs of certain breeds of laying hen. The current understanding of the problem is outlined and potential solutions are offered, based upon plant and avian genetic manipulation or chemical treatment of the rapeseed meal.
