Abstract
Technological advances have resulted in weapons systems with the ability to precisely hit targets at great range. To reduce potential safety hazards of such weapons, larger and larger areas are required to test these munitions, and for personnel to train with them. This has resulted in competition for the space the military requires to test and train with these weapons, and the space needed by growing municipalities and commercial activity. Further, an increasingly restrictive environmental regulatory frameworkโsuch as the Endangered Species Actโhas constrained military training realism. A solution to the challenge of sustaining bases and ranges is integrated community/military planning. ยฉ 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
