✦ Synopsis

Synopsis

Tlic laser-exvited Raman spectra have been obtained of poly-cproline in the solid and aqueous solution. I n the solid state, the Raman spectra are of the form I1 which is the left-handed helical form with the peptide bonds in the trans configuration. Dissolution of this form in water produced only minor changes in the Raman spectra. The differences in frequencies produced by dissolving the polymer are associated with vibrational modes of the pyrrolidine ring as indicated by comparison with the Raman spectrum of cproline. The similarity of the Raman spectra dictates that the conformations of poly-cproline chain are similar in the solid and aqueous solution.

The infrared absorption of poly-L-proline in concentrated aqueous salt solutions was measured in the fundanierital region. Of primary interest were the carbonyl absorption of the peptide linkage and the methylene C-H bending absorption of the pyrrolidine ring. These spectral regions each show an add

## Abstract The conformational transition of poly‐L‐tyrosine in 0.1__M__ KCl was investigated by ORD and infrared spectroscopy, potentiometric titration, and sedimentation velocity experiments. It is shown that the fully ordered conformer is obtained by slow titration of the random coil with 0.1__N
