-Absolute Raman scattering activities of aqueous solutions of sodium bromate and lithium iodate have been measured against NaClO, as an external standard. Electra-optical parameters (EOPs) for the Br-O and I-O bonds were calculated. Equilibrium bond polarizabilities were estimated from refractive index measurements in connection with Raman intensities of the bending modes. Relations between Bragg-Slater radii and EOPs are discussed. EOPS calculated from experimental data are compared with those from ob initio calculations. IN AN earlier paper [l] we have presented the electro-optical parameters (EOPs) of the oxo-anions of chlorine: C102-, C103-, ClO,-. It could be shown that the isotropic scattered intensity is, to a good approximation, proportional to the number of Cl-O bonds, regardless of the oxidation state of the chlorine. The present paper will complement polarizability data of halogen oxygen compounds and will allow us to compare polarizabilities of equivalent ions from different rows of the periodic table. Vibrational spectra and normal coordinate analyses of bromate and iodate have been published several times. We refer here to the data from Hester and co-workers [2]. The only Raman intensity data of these ions are, to our knowledge, in the paper of CHANTRY and PLANE [2a] from pre-laser days. The authors report only v1 and v2 intensities for C103-, and v1 only for Br03-and 103-because they did not evaluate tensor anisotropies.
