β¦ Synopsis
This is the first of a series of columns designed to help you understand those mystical activities of the committees worldwide that are defining documents that you probably never think about! But wait -although you certainly don't have to think about them, knowing a bit about standards might just help you in your everyday work with CAD equipment and applications. At a minimum, you may learn a new set of acronyms! At a maximum, you will gain some insight into the why and the how of graphics standards. A good reference is the special issue of Computer-Aided Design Vol 19 No 8 (October 1987). As shown in the high-level figure below, the CAD applications user interfaces to his system through several 'standardized' levels of functionality. The purpose of this column is to gently introduce you to some of the capabilities provided you by these levels.
