✦ Synopsis

Abstract

A study is made of the rainfall occurring at four British stations on occasions when they lie beneath the jet stream. The mean distribution of rainfall in relation to the jet stream provides evidence, in agreement with dynamical theory, for a direct circulation at the jet entrance and an indirect circulation at the jet exit. Precipitation patterns found for uniform currents provide no satisfactory evidence with regard to the preferred vertical circulations within the central region of the jet stream.

## Abstract The interannual fluctuations in the Southern Oscillation indices (Wright, 1975) and their relations to the Indian monsoon (June‐September) rainfall have been examined for the period of 106 years from 1875 to 1980. The monsoon rainfall is significantly (99.9 per cent level) correlated wi
