A method is described by which nonionic detergents of the alkyl-phenol class can be labeled with 1z51. The detergent is labeled to a high specific activity, which provides a sensitive method for the detection of detergent molecules bound to proteins, and, in addition, may provide a method by which proteins may be labeled indirectly.
