✦ Synopsis

Neutron irradiation of ruthenium provides a radiochemical method of high sensitivity to study its corrosion and passivation. The metal passivates in HC1 solutions at potentials >950 mV (sce), although some corrosion remains. Comparison of the results with those for Pt shows that Pt passivates more completely.

A scheme is proposed to explain the influence of C1-on the mechanism of anodic corrosion of metals of the Pt group.

THE purpose of this study was to determine the corrosion rate of ruthenium in HC1 solutions at high potentials. Since metal passivation occurs under these conditions and the corrosion rates are very small, advantage was taken of the high sensitivity afforded by the use of radioactive isotopes. The method outlined by Gorodetzkii, Dembrovskii and Losev 1 was used.
