Attention is drawn to a radical simplification of the minimax and the maximin theories for eigenvalues of a semibounded selfadjoint operator on a Hilbert space. In the simplified theory the seminal theorems become trivial consequences of even more trivial lemmas and almost all inequalities concerning eigenvalues of such operators which were hitherto supposed to be derivable only through the minimax and the maximin theorems follow directly from the primitive lemmas. The radical simplification achieved has led to some new results which are described.
