✦ Synopsis

Ethyl a-benzene-(EBSA) and a-toluenesulfonylmethylacrylate (ETSA) were found to show no homopolymerizability but to act as effective chain transfer reagents in radical polymerizations of methyl methacrylate (MMA), styrene (St) and n-butyl acrylate (BA), being coniugative monomers. The estimated chain tr&sfer'constants (C,) are as follows; ?,(EiSA) = 0.?3(50°c) ad &72(6O"C) for MMA, 4.80(5O"C) and 4.21&WC~) for St. 1.78(5O"C) and 1,69(6o"C) for BA: CXETSA) = l.O9(6O"C) for MMA. 6.80(6O"C) for St, 2.31(60%) for'BA. i.r. anh 'H-NMR spectra of phly&lMA)'and poiy(St)'formed in the p&se& of EBSA and ETSA are consistent with the view that the polymers bear a C=C bond at one terminal and an arenesulfonyl group at the other. These findings indicate that the ethyl a-arenesulfonylmethylacrylates undergo chain transfer reaction via an addition-fragmentation mechanism.
