✦ Synopsis

Relative rates of long-range electron tunnelling between isoenergetic states and turmelling wi:h simultaneous photon emission are discussed. The former will predominate in molecular solids but the latter mzy account for some emissions of irradiated alkanes.

There is increasing evidence that electron tunnei-Ling is a significant process in molecular solids foliowing radioiysis: observations cover a wide range of times -iO_! to IO5 scorresponding to distances up to ~50 A.
