✦ Synopsis


A microwave discharge in a SOCl,/Ar mixture has been developed as a source for kinetic studies of the SO(A 3110,,,z) states in a flow reactor using the laser-induced fluorescence method. The radiative lifetime of SO(A 'r&, v' =O) for a 300 K Boltzmann distribution of rotational and spin-orbit states was found to be 35 + 3 KS. Quenching rate constants at 300 K were measured for He, Ar and 11 molecular reagents. The spin-orbit relaxation rate constant for the 'Hz, v' = 0 and 'II,, u' = 0 states in Ar are in the (1-3)X lo-" cm3 molecule-' s-' range.
