The photon spectrum accompanying 1S electron capture in the first forbidden unique decay of 204 Tl was measured. The total radiation intensity in the energy range from 100 keV to the spectrum end-point was found to be 2.8(2) × 10 -5 per K-capture, confirming a previously reported strong disagreement

✦ Synopsis
The Radiative Electron Capture (REC) decay of 137La has been studied. The absolute intensity as well as the shape has been measured for both the total and the 1S component of the photon spectrum. An analysis shows that the standard theory of internal bremsstrahlung can account for the present experiments. No compelling evidence is found for the contribution of detour transitions, contrary to the situation in the previously studied cases. A second forbidden unique EC-branch to an excited state at 283.6 + 0.1 keV in 137Ba, intensity of (6.8 d: 0.4) x 10 -7 per decay, log f~t = 14.6, has been discovered.
