✦ Synopsis
Exposure of the red alga PorvhYre verforata or leaves of Phvtolaooa m~E£9£~ and Echlcodorus sp. to white l~gbt equivalent to fUll sunM~ht for short periods Induoed large decreases of variable fluoresoenoe measured at 693 am at 77K. This change was not pruduoed by phetolnblbltlon but rather appeared to result ~rem an iseresee in the rats uonstant of rediatlonless transition in the reaction centers of photosystes II. It is proposed that this inoresee is related to the formation of the high energy state which serves as a photoprotective mechanism in plants.
