✦ Synopsis

A~tract--An approximate solution for the pressure field in a filtration cell is obtained yielding a theoretical estimate for the thickness of the shear zone in the flow in the cell. Limitations of the theoretical estimate are discussed. The analysis indicates that for large value of the cell height to cell radius ratio, the thickness of the shear layer is of the order of magnitude of the septum thickness. An error analysis of the approximations used is included.

The performance of a hollow fiber reverse osmosis system was determined experimentally by measuring the fraction of feed recovered as product, 4, and the concentration reduction ratio, 0,. A predictive model for these two quantities was developed which yields results that agree with the experimental
