Much anticipated sequel to THE KEEPER OF SECRETS, following the fortunes of the Horowitz family from pre-war Berlin to the present. Dr Jakob (Kobi) Voight is an artist and an art history lecturer at Melbourne University. Before he leaves for a three-month sabbatical in Germany, based in Berlin, his mother gives him a battered old notebook she found in her late mother's possessions. She doesn't know anything about the book, which is written in Hebrew, but it has some wonderful pencil sketches and she thinks Jakob might like to find out more about it. While in Berlin, Kobi takes the notebook to the Synagogue and gets a Shoah scholar to translate it into English. As he explores the city and visits memorials and museums, he reads the book, which is written by 'R' and is a love letter to her baby 'E', born out of wedlock in 1942. Gradually he realises that he is part of a tangled web stretching from the Holocaust to the present that will shatter lives and cast everything he has...
