โœฆ Synopsis

Eany reactions with dimethyl sulphoxide in acidic medium or acetic anhydride proceed by way of an acyloxy-or alkoxysulphonium ion. Examples are Kornblum oxidation of halogenides, tosglates and alcohols (l), pummerer rearrangements (2) and thiomethoxymethylation of phenols (3).

TaCI s and TaClfSilica gel have been effectively used as Lewis acid catalysts for acetylation of alcohols. Also TaClfClairal ligands have been used for kinetic resolution of 2 ยฐ alcohols albeit in low ees.
