Il giorno in cui, per la prima volta, parlarono a Domenico Quirico del califfato fu un pomeriggio, un pomeriggio di battaglia ad al-Quesser, in Siria. Tornato in Italia, Quirico rivelΓ² ciΓ² che anche altri comandanti delle formazioni islamiste gli avevano ribadito: il Grande Califfato non era affatto un velleitario sogno jihadista, ma un preciso progetto strategico cui attenersi e collegare i piani di battaglia. Non vi fu alcuna eco a queste rivelazioni. Molti polemizzarono sgarbatamente: erano sciocchezze di qualche emiro di paese, suvvia il califfato, roba di secoli fa. Nel giro di qualche mese tutto Γ¨ cambiato, e il Grande Califfato Γ¨ ora una realtΓ politica e militare con cui i governi e i popoli di tutto il mondo sono drammaticamente costretti a misurarsi. Questo libro non Γ¨ un trattato sull'Islam, poichΓ© si tiene opportunamente lontano da dispute ed esegesi religiose. Γ soltanto un viaggio, un viaggio vero, con cittΓ , villaggi, strade e deserti, nei luoghi del Grande Califfato.
