Quinone methide imines cannot be prepared from aromatic amines and carbonium salts by processes analogous to those that have proved valuable for preparation of quinone methides "1 and quinodimethanes 121. We have developed three methods for the synthesis of these compounds which, except for the stable N-phenylimine of fuchsone (31, have previously been only assumed [41, or proved by spectroscopy 151, to exist as intermediates; we here describe two of our methods.
