The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that a low-budget information system using knowledge bases can be developed and adopted in a manufacturing firm to improve the productivity of the organization. ✦ Synopsis
We are interested in finding automated procedures for extracting information from knowledge bases which contain linguistic information. We use the concept of a possibility distribution to represent the information in a linguistic value. The theory of approximate reasoning is used to provide both a means for translating propositions into a machine-understandable form and a methodology for making inferences from this information. An algorithmic procedure consisting of the development of a knowledge tree and an evaluation procedure resulting in the desired information are presented. In this paper we restrict ourselves to answering questions about the value of a variable from a knowledge base consisting of simple data statements and implication statements.
